Radio is South Africa’s most important source of public information, reaching 97 percent of the country’s households. loveLife produces weekly radio programmes on South Africa’s most popular youth radio stations, and partners with stations that broadcast in all eleven official languages to provide culturally-sensitive programmed segments on popular shows. In August 2011, loveLife launched an innovative 60-second daily soap broadcast on Yfm, Lotus FM and Ukhozi FM. Foxy Chix is a daily drama series that follows the lives of three teenage girls in the context of disproportionately high rates in infection among young women. Powered by the universality of story, audiences accompany the Foxy Chix on their journeys of coming of age as they bring to life the challenges teens face today as they try carve a place for themselves in their transition to adulthood. These issues include early sexual debut, transactional sex and teen pregnancy – all factors contributing to the ongoing incidence of HIV among young women.
Radio programming produced and presented by young people trained by loveLife is also broadcast from fully-equipped radio broadcast facilities in loveLife Y-Centres. loveLife also produces content for 10 community radio stations across the country and has linked Y-Centre studios to these stations for regional specific and ethnic language content.
